Public Rights of Way

"Definitive Map of Public Rights of Way for the County of Essex"

This document is a paper item held by the County Council with various bodies around the County, including Parish, and other, Councils holding a copy for local reference.  The 'original' copy held by the County Council is the legally definitive record. This arrangement, on its own, did not form an entirely convenient arrangement for the usual purposes of walkers and other users of the public rights of way seeking information on where public footpaths exist, where they lead and how they are connected into the wider picture.

Walk4Life

Are you looking to use walking our footpaths as part of plans to improve or safeguard fitness and wellbeing?

Walk4Life is part of the Change4Life movement that has been set up to encourage families and adults to eat well, move more and live longer, by making small lifestyle changes that add up to big health benefits. it is all about helping people move and walking is a great way to start.  Almost everyone can do it, anywhere, at any time - you can just get out there and start walking.

Walking is a great way to improve the general health of the whole family. It’s one of the easiest ways for children to do their recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day that gets their heart beating faster. These 60 active minutes a day will help burn off energy and prevent excess fat being stored in the body. It also helps young muscles and bones grow properly. And for adults who need to be active for 30 minutes 5 times a week, walking can help you fulfil this in a cheap, easy and fun way.

The Walk4Life website costs £5 a year and has thousands of walk ideas all over the country. The website uses OS maps which can easily be printed out at home so is proving really popular.  People can also keep a track of the walks they have done and set themselves a target!
